After 16 weeks they want you off your back because you compress a major blood vessel (the inferior vena cava) which then restricts blood flow to the baby. Lying on the left side is best for optimal blood flow to the placenta/baby, but as long as you are off your back either side is fine.

This is really hard for me to do, I go to sleep on my side and wake up on my back several times a night, but I keep trying.

When I was pregnant , my doctor never told me to stay off my back at all but did say to stay off my stomach tho and that was once i found out i was pregnant..

If u want the best nights sleep, buy a big pillow that is the lenght of ur body for pregnant woman and curl up to this pillow that makes u feel more comfortable... If u want the best advice, seek medical avice and what ur own doctor tells u to do, its best for u that way...

Don't know if it's true or not.. I never bother with what the state (nhs) say anyway I just live my own life ..If it was true it would not stop me Women are not bad people for wanting to sleep on their backs when pregnant, I would eat raw eggs etc people used to ... babies were fine etc etc . I know the state loves people to do what it says but I have given up listening, I cannot abide this attitude that women seem to want to put others down for just doing normal everyday things ... what is next midwives advise against standing up or sitting maybe

Yes it is true. There are a few reasons why women should not sleep on their backs, especially third trimester when the baby is quite big. Firstly, it can cause severe back pain as the weight of the baby, fluid, placenta etc rest on your spine.
Also, doctors say that the added pressure can affect your vena cava, the main vein in your body, which stops blood flow to your legs and can also affect the baby.

Oh my god, what a mixed bag of answers, im really scared now. Im 24 wks pregnant and have been sleeping on my back, cos i find this position really comfortable. Everytime i try to sleep on side baby starts to dig into mattress. I will have to start sleeping on side though now with a pillow under bump.

Most doctors say sleep in whatever position that is the most comfortable. Although some people are advised to sleep on there sides. This is to help lower the blood pressure and relieve the pressure on the back and spine.

I'm in my forth pregnancy and have never been told not to sleep on my back. What I have learnt is when baby is uncomfortable I'm uncomfortable and cant sleep. She calls the shots not me, i don't sleep on my tummy as its impossible (whatever the medical reason is if I'm honest I'm afraid of squashing her). Once baby settles that's me for the night whether I'm lying on my back or standing on my head. What does give me pleasure(a little) is lying my bump up against my husbands back (i tell him i need the heat) because if I'm being kicked he feels it to and has an idea whats it like!

You should sleep however you feel comfortable.
Sleeping on your back it;s harder to breathe.. I was scared at the beginning because i thought something would happen to the baby like no oxygen but i found out that it's me that i can't really breathe although i find myself sleeping on my back a lot during the night i tried not to but cant' help it.

I have NEVER slept on my back untill about my eighth month of pregnancy.... Its not the most comfy thing ever but I do it in my sleep and don't realize I'm doing it untill I wake up with a backache!!!! But, I think its true but I do not know why. Good question.
