By color you can say for example, ruby is pink,to know it is real or not ,take your hair(hope you are not bald),put it on the stone and bring a burning matchstick near its end,if real stone ,the part of hair on the stone will not burn .

Well it depends on what you mean by real. "Genuine mined" are real. "Lab Created" are real. Lab Created Gems are those that are chemically the same as what you will find in a mine but, the mnatural chemical processes needed to create the gems are simulated in a controlled setting. Things that are listed as Cubic Zirconia or Crystal and tinted to look red or green are not real rubies or emralds.

A jeweler can usually tell the difference between the real thing, crystal and CZs if they take it off the mount to examine it. They probably wouldn't be able to tell if it's genuine mind or lab created without a certificate of authenticity.

a ruby is a 9 on moh's harness scale
so get some quartz
and scratch it on the ruby
if it does scratch the ruby then it is not a real ruby

Do the same for the emerald
which is an 8 on moh's hardness scale

taking it to a store where there is a certified gemologist is the only way for you to know for sure. many stores and department stores will tell you for free while they clean and examine the prongs for you (they charge a small fee for cleaning - $5 to $7 or so) and if you want a written appraisal, it will cost you a small fee (around $25). they can tell you the size, quality, cut and everything else of importance like the quality of the color, resale value, etc

Take them to a jeweler to be evaluated. He can tell if they are real, man made or fake.
