It's tradition. You don't thank God for all that He has given and then starve yourself. A feast in honor of our God is always a good thing. :)
*EDIT*
You just can't forget to thank God while you're feasting.

Reborn,
simple my friend. YOU are a former Marine that remembers the fox holes, the digging in, eating crap, taking crap, and yes sometimes talking crap. I like you recall being so hungry out in the field with the rain, the snow, the sand, the heat, the cold, and the dirt - that now?
I simply eat because I can - BUT NOTHING goes to waste my friend - so, fill your plate up with left overs today - I am certain that unlike me, YOU say grace first - and for this YOU are a better person than me.
Semper Fi,
Gerry :)))

because it was thanksgiving, and you were just showing how grateful you were for all that wonderful feast that god had blessed you with, and you really only get to do it once a year, so it's not bad to splurge that once. you will feel like a cow the next day, i know i do, but it's ok. just eat moderatly the rest of the week..

Brother, I could really use your help today, I still have most of a turkey,
4 pumpkin pie,
half of a Cherry pie,
1 1/2 chocolate pies,
a large bowl of banana pudding,
mashed potatoes, and gravy.
Stuffing,( now I know why they call it stuffing)
pink stuff, (that is the only name we know it by.)
and most of a tray of deviled Eggs,(they forgot to put them out)
and I really don't think that I am up to another day like yesterday just yet.

Because it was THANKSGIVING! Chill out and resume regular eating habits today. Eating like a pig one day a year won't hurt you! Well...other than maybe some bloating and indigestion.

Well, if you think of it like this you'll never question yourself.
It's a compliment to those that cook so much food. I know when I cook I'd like for most of the food to be eaten.
