I'm guessing it's one of two things.... Either it's a mechanism to prevent overheating.... but usually if that is the case it will automatically shut down, but not auto restart.
Other thing it could be is it's just an old computer and it's protecting itself when it gets a memory or hard-drive read error. You know that 'blue screen of death'? Its that screen that pops up when your computer has a total system failure and needs to shut down... well, I think it's just that your computer is running into problems, and it's protecting itsself by suddenly shutting off then turning back on.
My best advice is to try not to multitask too much, and you'll run into the problem less.

Sounds like a virus to me, you should try to download the free edition of AVG and run it.
There are a lot of reason why your pc would restart
Virus
Overheating
Hard drive full with no warning setup to let you know
Ram defect or if you touched the RAM the wrong way
Maybe also try to download Ccleaner, it will clean your computer from junk file.
You could also download the free edition of Adware, It will help remove some adware and spyware on your pc
Best of luck

The shutdown thing is probably a bad power supply. The 'can't read from device' and print problems point to bad IDE and/or motherboard problems. In other words, that dinosaur is falling apart.
What are you running on it, anyway - Windows 3.1? Time to bury it in the backyard and get yourself something made in this century.

Buddy, i get many problems with my computer too. But i guess its not a good thing to ask technical stuffs in Answers. many who answer here just say what they feel and they are not actually knowledgeable with it. If you're really insistent in having someone help you, i suggest you visit cybertechhelp.com. You'll need to register at first then post your problem there. Their moderators are knowledgeable people who will reply to you for free. They will have a daily discussion with you on what to do with your computer. During my first try there, I was able to remove 1000+ viruses, worms and malwares from my system. Try it. You'll never lose something.

Registry might have been corrupted by virus or just corrupted. He said the registry is a complicated matter. One solution is clean format and re-install the O/S. If rebooting occurs later, then definitely the REGISTRY is the problem.
