I was just on the phone with my father in law and there was a 2 minute pause... I think both of us felt a little uncomfortable, confused and didn't know what else to say. Then finally he broke it and said, okay, I'm a little busy, I'll talk to you later. LOL!

What the heck?! What's so uncomfortable about silence? It's better than saying something stupid.

I never really thought of that. That's a good question. Maybe its because you dont want to be rude and say "Yeah gotta go" so you just sit there and say nothing hoping the other person will say goodbye first.

I often find myself in situations in which there is an awkward silence because I can't think of anything to say. To me it's awkward because it's like revealing my most uninteresting side to the other person. Also, I think we're socialized to feel like silence is bad.

oh dont remind me.i just hate these awkward moments.i always have like these moments especialy with old ppl.i love old ppl but the problem is that i just dont know what to say!!! bcz simply u cant talk to them like they are friends or something so i just dont know what kind of subject we should talk.so usualy i ran from these silence moments.but one time i just knew how to deal with those issues(awkward moments of silence) i just talked to an old women(the mother of my friend) about what she like,i mean favourate subject,so we had so much fun,i realy enjoyed it.i saw all her photo when she was young and the photo of her kids and it was fun and i had happy moment.bcz usually all i care about is how i wanna talk about my favourate subject so this time i gaved a chance to someone other than me.and she was happy that she had some kind of attention :-))) try it maybe u shoud talk to him about he's hobbies or even he's job or else...

It makes me uncomfortable and I don't really know why. I have to come up with anything to say just to break that moment.

Id rather it WAS silent. It doesnt bother me...and if it gets like that on the phone, I just tell them I have to go. Its an easy fix. My mother in law is like that.*

I dunno. Silence always seems to arise when there isnt anything important to talk about. When two poeple are talking and they sont know eachother that well, ie. in laws, there comes a point in any conversation where it just sort of fades away.

I think its because you think you have nothing in common and nothing interesting worth saying so its just like waiting for something to happen
