I am in town at ym parents house, and they have had a problem with a pet, I think a cat has been urinating on the rug. They cant find the exact location and it doesnt always smel.. they have tried many different things, like shampooing the rug, Resolve, a bunch of carpet cleaners and still the smell persists. What can be done about it, any home remedies or something. My parents are really wanting to avoid buying a new rug considering this one is only a year old. Please any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

If the smell has gotten into the carpet pad, which it probably has, you have a problem. I've been where you're at and didn't have any luck with Nature's Miracle or any of the other products you buy at the pet stores. I probably could have replaced my carpet for all the money I've spent on cleaners, and that includes steam cleaners. There are 2 products that worked better than others: Odoban which you can buy at Sam's and is great for removing smells in laundry, etc. This costs about $10 for a gallon. The other is OdorXit (www.Odorxit.com), but this about $50 for a bottle. Good luck! Right now I'm waiting for my pet to die so that I can buy new carpeting! (Just kidding!!!)

Cat pee is worse than dog pee, that's why there are special solutions just for kitty pee! Not knowing where the spot is makes this tough!! Cats tend to pee in private, like behind things or onto upholstery. Black lights help find the secret spots......you might want to invest in one.......check pet stores, they might have one.
And above is right, it could be down in the pad by now. When you find the spot, cut the carpet away (it can be reset) and cut and remove the old pad. I hope the stink isn't into the subfloor!! If it is just plywood, it can be painted over with a sealing paint such as Kilz. If wood............ah........rotsa ruck. Actually replacing the wood sections is the only way as the pee gets way down into the wood. Cut some replacement pad from under the closet rug, tape it down with double sided carpet tape and ditto with the rug section. Voila!!

Go to the pet store, and buy a bottle of "Nature's Miracle". Spray it everywhere. It eliminates the odor of the urine so the cat won't smell it and pee there again.

A landowner in town had the same problem with one of his rental properties. My steam cleaner took care of both the stains and the smell without any pre-treatment or perfumes. His wife (and the new tennants) were elated.

I think that the problem has been going on for a while. If after all that you have done, the urine has seeped into the under pad, which is installed for our comfort of walking. Deeper cleaning, replacement or patience will solve the issue.

ODOBAN at Sam's Wholesale is awesome!!! For cat urine, I would probably mix it with something that works on a enzyme action like natures miracle or four paws stain and odor remover (pets mart).
