you may be familar with several heroes in Mahabharatha and may love or worship the warrior like Krishna, Arjuna and Yudhishtira or Bhima. Love and respect towards the brave and powerful heroes are common and justifiable. But when you go deeper into the complex stories of Mahabharata and immerse yourself into the characterization of this epic, you will find an unsung hero. Karna will definitely be your choice. Your research will undoubtedly clarify that Karna is the real hero of Mahabharata.

In this book - to be found at the first link below on Google Books (which can't be cut and pasted):
The Sanskrit Hero: Karna in Epic Mahabharata By Kevin MacGrath
Karna is depicted as the hero.
but in the second link:
"Krishna is the hero in the timeless epic Mahabharata, India's classic story of world dominating dynasties.
Mahabharata tells the story of how the previous age of heroic princes and kings came to an end and how the present age began.
Bhagavad-gita is one chapter of the Mahabharata.
Although the main characters in the Mahabharata are the Pandava brothers, Lord Krishna is always there as their friend and counsel.
Krishna appears countless times throughout the narrative to help His friends in their journey towards destiny.
and then
"I am really surprised to note that the real hero Arjuna the intimate friend of Lord Krishna ignored by many of the forum users. ( But i respect other people vote)
The root of Mahabharath is Lord Krishna and the trunk is Arjuna and they both are praised everywhere in the Mahabharatha as Nara Narayana.
The Krishna, Naradha, Dhiritharastra, Vidura, Drona, Bhishma and most of the prominent characters agreed in the Mahabharat itself that the true HERO is the invincible, the ape bannered, diadem decked, Dhanjanseya aka Arjuna, Partha, Jishnu.
He is the only undefeated hero in the Mahabharath. Gita is recited for him only and he is a clean soul next to krishna IMO my all time favorite without any doubt."
I guess it all depends on the individual reader.

Dear,
MAHABHARATA:
The most comprehensive Hindu epic, complied, according to legend, by the poet-sage Vyasa. A compendium of religion, philosophy and politics, the Mahabharata epitomizes popular Hinduism. The main story revolves around the strife of two related royal families, the Pandavas and the Kauravas, which exploded into a disastrous civil war involving the whole Indian nation. What was probably once a comparatively Short epic celebrating the battles of the early years of the Aryan conquest of India drew to itself many legends and wonders tales of all India. With its hundred thousand Sanskrit couplets, the Mahabharata is easily the longest epic of man. Among all its heroic men and women the most prominent is the luminous figure of KRISNA delivering his sermon, the BHAGAVAD-GITA.

I believe that Veda Vyasa is the ultimate hero. Imagine he was there before the war, after the war and even Wayy after the war. He sat down and recited the entire events in his life in a Poem form, then calling a God to scribe into a scripture. No human, demi-god or even GOD himself thought of this.
The Mahabhrata is the sole idea and work done by Veda Vyasa, without him there would not BE a Mahabharata. I hope most of you might agree.

Dhritrashtra, who lives till the end. The entire story surrounds on his life, His capalities and incapabilities, aspirations and regrets. His sons Kouravas and their fight with pandavas started because of the copmlications his blindness created. He loves his Son Duryodhan so much that accepts every plan made by shakuni to get him power and empire. tHE ENTIRE MAHABHARAT WAR WAS fought with the name of Duryodhana and yudhishthir but even at that time Dhritrashtra remaines as the king.At the end when Yudhisthir wins and is called up by Dhritrashtra to get the empire. Pandavas won the war and Arjun comes as the most prominent among pandavas but if u assess the whole story its Dhritrashtra who dominates the story, Though the story is so extended and includes elaboration of each and every character that its difficult to choose one hero. At times, Bhisma, Dronacharya, Duryodhan, Karna, Arjun, Abhimanyu all emerge as main characters but no one ends up as the hero.
