i used to be a police officer and i can tell you that we always dreaded being sent to a motorbike accident.
The problem with bikes is car drivers simply dont see them. if you are a car driver then you will know that there are always blind spots where the car pillars are on the front windscreen.
it is easy not to notice notice a bike because of this and the narrow image they present which is also usually dark and blends into the road. time after time a car will pull out in front of a bike. A bike rider can do his or her best to be noticed. with reflective and fluorescent jackets. keep your head light on at all times. but although these things help they dont stop the problem.
the next problem with a bike is if you come off you are very very venerable. of course you can wear protective clothing, though i think leathers in Egypt will be a bit uncomfortable and a helmet. These will help if the speed is not too high, but increase the speed to a mere 60KH and accident statistics show that death is more likely and believe me you dont want to know any more. Except for me to repeat that police officers do not like attending bike accidents.
If that doesn't put you off, my daughter is a nurse, and she says bike accident victims and far more likely to have serious problems after their accidents than car drivers.
if that doesnt put you off, go ahead....... live dangerously!

I thought of it this way when I decided to buy my Hummer a year ago.
Reasons why you should not buy a motorbike:
1- It's dangerous.
2- Cars are safer.
Reasons why you should buy a motorbike:
1- It's cheap.
2- I could , can't, and wouldn't be able to afford to buy a car any where in the near or far future.
3- It doesn't cost as much money for gas as a car would.
4- You're already spending too much money on the taxis.
So when you think of it this way, yes, it is dangerous. But do you have any other choice?
I guess not.
I must say this though. I have to agree with Adam about the fact that riders are divided into two categories" those who have had an accident, and those who are about to have one".
Allah is the protector.

Safe? um how about you will take a terrible chest infection from the pollution, remember how close you will be to those 30 years old cars that are killers with pollution- Keep getting taxis until you can afford a car. Its not worth getting sick over- plus many people drive in egypt like they are fish- no looking left or right and hey whats a mirror? So if your passing a car, while on a bike - maybe you could get in trouble.

don't do it there is no point just as AA said keep getting a taxi till you can afford a car. The drivers will never see you as they never look in the mirrors. My boyfriend (lives in Egypt) had a bike and him and his friend were riding it and they had a really bad accident he has no feeling in parts of his hand lost all of his front teeth (so had to pay from porcelain teeth) has sooooooo many scars all over his body and he came better of than his friend. His friend was in hospital for along time he broke both legs and was really poorly. This happened cos a car didn't see them not cos they were bad drivers in a car you have something around you to protect you more. It really isn't worth it, save your money and buy a car as you might not be able to save your life if your in a accident.

Someone who works for me was driving his motorbike at night and sadly he ran into a micro bus without lights driven by a 14 year old boy.
He had a terible head on crash, taken to hospital where he later died.
Hope this encourages you not to get one.
P.s. I know of a few motorbike accidents but I don't think you want to hear about them.

when i see a person riding a motorbike, i close my eyes so as not to witness an accident.
traffic in Egypt is a big problem.
getting a taxi is expensive.
getting a car is too expensive.
however, you didnt mention the city where you live.
if you plan to ride it in a suburb , or a less populated city, it would be ok.
but you must learn to make manouvres between mad cars and slow pedestrians.

It's ok as long as you watch out for two types of car drivers: Women & youngsters (That's based on my experience as a motorbike rider)
