The day after is traditionally the start of Christmas, when people decorate, trim the tree, etc. Used to be you didn't even see Christmas displays until then. Also, I think starting back with cabbage Patch Dolls being the MUST HAVE toy, you wanted to make sure you got one for your kid. Now its wii, etc, but you get the idea.
however if you're smart, you know what you'll pay for an item on your list & would have been watching for that item since July!
Also, a lot of people have that Fri off.

I think that the reason there are so many sales is because with Thanksgiving out of the way, all the focus can be put on Christmas. Christmas is just a month away and no one really has to work the day after Thanksgiving so people think, hey, let's start that shopping. Stores just give their good sales to encourage people to come to their stores to start their shopping.
Also, it's called Black Friday because it's the time of year when stores go from red (debt) to black (profit).

I honestly have no idea. I think it's because they didn't think ahead to gift-giving, and then Thanksgiving rolls around and they're like "Oh my god! I don't have anything for ______!". So they rush out. And then the stores caught on to this and started putting things on sale to get even MORE people to wait and shop then. But that's just my theory. Personally I'm staying home, drinking Hot Chocolate and watching TV. Plus later today I won't be so worn out from shopping I won't even remember it's my birthday. Wouldn't it be horrible if you forgot to eat your own birthday cake? But I digress....
Happy Holidays!
Ari: Sometimes even earlier; the malls around here opened at midnight. Which means you'd have had to be there by 10 p.m. THURSDAY at the latest!

Because its the first day of christmas shopping, like the turkey dinner is over with and some people have the day off so onto the next holiday. Plus there are some really good deals going on that day.

That's when the stores are having bigs sales for Christmas. But seriously, I wouldn't do it because that's when EVERYBODY else is out. There's tons of traffic and, unless you get up at 3 am,
all the good stuff is already gone. I heard that people were so greedy they started fighting over
an Xbox and one guy killed the other! Another time 2 moms were fighting over the last Elmo toy!!! It's pretty stupid in my opinion.

Tradition. A lot of people think it's fun to get up at 3:00 a.m. and fight the traffic and wait in line for hours and be in a huge crowd. There are some pretty good sales though, if you can tolerate all that madness, which I can not.

They can't resist the sales....
My niece works retail and she had to go to work at 2am this morning to control the LINES that they will have outside the door for when her store opens at 5am!!!!! Is that crazy, or what? But the first people in line will get the handful of super discounted laptop computers for only $400 including a printer. (Original price without the printer over $1000)
As for me, I am staying home. I don't really want to buy anything.

Because since Thanksgiving is out of the way now everyone can focus on Christmas. Retailers take advantage of this with their sales.

A lot of people have the day after Thanksgiving off from work and school. It's the last weekday (or holiday) off before Christmas and stores advertise heavily offering reduced prices.

it's only the social creatures who love shopping today.
They like crowds, they like mingling and bustling and hustling.
Those who don't like bumping elbows and fenders and bumpers with other people, are staying home and waiting.
By the way, the best deals are not today. Why would a store mark down prices when they know demand is high?
They might have a few bait and switch or loss leaders on sale, but that's about it.
