A red ALT light come on. You can only drive for 10 minutes because the battery is dead. Or the battery is bubbling of acid because it's overcharging. If you have a voltmeter you can measure the voltage at the battery terminals while the car is running. It should be between 13 and 16 volts. Below or above the alternator is bad.

a bad alternator could drain the battery even when the car's not running but certainly when the car is running.
one way to tell for sure is if you put a battery in the car you know is good and it dies very quickly, your alternator is not producing enough current.
there are other components in some cars that could also drain the battery, however, so the surest method of checking the alternator is to remove it and take it to a parts store to check.

Of course, when it is bad the battery will not charge. Sometimes, when it is going bad, your lights will start to dim at night, the other electronics, blower, radio, wipers, etc will start to slow down and fail. The vehical will ussually stop running soon. Sometimes only one one band of the alternator will go out and you may have some of these symptoms without the car stopping. Take it to your auto parts store and ask them if they can test it for you.

First, when your Alternator (or battery) Light stays on or flickers after you start your car. But that can also be caused by a corroded connection (as it was in my older Toyota), so you probably should take it to an auto parts store to have it tested. the larger parts stores can test it for free. Regards, Mike.

when it is getting ready to completely stop working your lights will dim and you can actually hear the engine go under load when turning things on such as the heater, the radio, or the lights. Whenthe vehicle is running disconnect the battery if the engine stalls the alt is bad or even if it sounds like it is under major load but keeps running it is weak.
Eventually when the battery is dead and the alt is gone the vehicle won't turn over.

Use a multimeter and check the dc voltage while the car is running. It should give 14+ volts with full load. If its not, check for loose connections. If coonections are ok, change the alt.

A bad alternater may not charge battery, be noisey, may lockup and not turn at all, or charge the battery too much. Any of the above
