Their likeness or proximity to our experience gives real meanings to words and ideas.... we can have no thought nor logic nor even language nor words if there were to be no experience at all.... an experience in this context begins with perception and ends with understanding.

What do you mean by "meaningful"?

In one sense, the word means referring to an observed datum. The word "cat" means what it does because it refers to the animal with claws and a long tail. In this sense, words and ideas are meaningful because they correspond (however vaguely, at whatever distance) with something real.

In a different sense, the word means relevant to the point at issue. If we're talking politics, "Does Gordon Brown love spaghetti?" is not, in this context, a meaningful question: it does not raise a point germane to the discussion. But if you were (poor old you) taking him out to dinner, the question might have its point and, in this sense, its meaning.

Related to this sense, there is also an even vaguer usage. People say that an idea is meaningful if it is suggestive of other ideas or capable of useful development.

There might be other usages as well. The meaning of meaning is a problem at least 100 years old!

They can have intrinsic beauty (like a poem) but these days few people have much time for poetry.

Mostly words and ideas are meaningful because they relate to real life.

"How They are put Together" Like when building a house...a good thought or concept...followed by linking ones, slowly building untill the entire thought has been given,or expressed to the extent that the listeners or readers can "see" in their minds the "picture drawn" with all the colors and art work...done with the "words" of the speaker or writer...and this is what makes "words" Powerful! "Peace!" And when you have done a good job, you will know this because they will have a "memory" of it,and talk about it, and desire "more" of what you have to say or write! bye!

Words or ideas become meaningful when you can relate them to your life and its purpose through past experiences.

If a word or idea supports life growing flourishing it has beautiful meaning , if it supports death and destruction, the meaning is ugliness. That is my standard, what is yours?
