Hmm, don't see how they are the "same" - except insofar as they're both bad/evil. Goblins seem to be worse than trolls.

They're the same. He changed his mind between the hobbit and the L of the R and started to call them trolls. Some more modern versions of The Hobbit have updated it and called them trolls.
