Oxygen is not so much important to red blood cells, but the red blood cells are used to bring oxygen to the rest of the cells in our body that require oxygen for cellular respiration.

from my general knowledge i think the blood has many contributions like:
it's a channel that provides "fuel" for cells in form of dissolved sugar or glucose, that means energy for body in local spots
They also deliver oxygen.
it provides antibiotic substances, natural or artificial, in fight against injuries of any kind, it's the main mean for immune system; also helps to heal wounds
--it regulates the temperature of the body
--it takes out the toxins
--provides all kind of chemicals and substances that are used for different purposes in the body. For example chemicals that are needed for brain function.

oxygen is important because it is a raw material for cellular respiration which, in turn, converts glucose into a currency that our body understands, energy; which in turn is vital in continuing the activities of the ALL cells of the body.
