It's a matter of attitude. Like I'm not well but I go meet a friend fighting for life. I talk to him and try to convince him that he would soon be alright. In that case u would forget your own pain. But if u talk a little about him and start talking about your own problem, your own pain would rather increase. If u feel others r better off than u, u r unhappy. But if compare yourself with those who r not as previledged as u r, u r always happy. Happiness, pain, sufferings etc. all r a matter of feeling and that feeling depends on ur own attitude towards them.

I think that's "one's pain," isn't it?

Anyway, it is true that dealing with someone else's hurt and need for sympathy can make you forget about your own. Especially when your own is chronic. Once your body has signaled "There's something wrong here," which is what pain is for, you can distract yourself from it unless it spikes to warn you that you've done something stupid, like move in a bad way.

Did you mean to say: "one's pain"? Because that makes all the difference. Or did u mean Elaine's pain? Or Elizabeth's or Gustav's...

Not extinguished, but it might be forgotten for a time while you are comforting the other person and dealing with their problems.
