I don't know but I like the question. It's got me thinking! Everyone in my family is left handed - does that mean we are secret polar bears?

Cute!

According to the lore of a Native Alaskan tribe, the Inupiaq, all polar bears are "southpaws" (lefties). The Inupiaq (in-yoo-pak) have lived with the polar bears for thousands of years, and their survival depends on knowing everything about these animals. So when the Inupiaq hunt polar bears, they stay to the right of the beasts if they can, on the theory that the bear's right paw is a bit slower than its left. The Inupiaq must know what they're talking about, since they haven't all been made into polar bear chew treats.

There aren't any scientific studies that have determined if the Inupiaq folklore is true. The Inupiaq knowledge comes to us through the writings of anthropologist Richard Nelson. In the 1960s, Nelson spent about a year living with the Inupiaq in the tiny village of Wainwright; I've read this book, which I've cited below (I looked up the polar bear lore in the book's index).

It is a that the great white bears are left-pawed. Scientists observing the animals haven't noticed a preference. In fact, polar bears seem to use their right and left paws equally.

Polar bears are not left handed but prefer to use their left paw when eating.

Who cares, a left-handed wallop from a Polar Bear hurts just as must as a right-handed one!

Bears have not been studied carefully enough to know exactly, but most mammals tend to be right handed by about 3 to 1. Left handedness is apparently rarer in humans than in most other animals.
