"don't get old love, its awful these days"

I don't know what aspect she was referring to specifically, but it made me think all our old people should enjoy their last years, it made me really sad, I could have cried. For her, and also for the future, for me!

Getting old certainly scares me. You have to live off a pittance, few people have any time or respect for you and you're scared to walk down the street or open your door because of the lowlifes who pray on the elderly. Doesn't sound like much fun to me. And yes I agree with you, most elderly people have worked all their lives and should be able to relax and enjoy the time they have left. Such a shame that few are able to.

They say that life is what you make it but.......when you get older:

You don't have the energy that you even had even 10 years earlier.
You have more aches and pains.
You aren't able to do the things that gave you so much pleasure like dancing til dawn for instance.
You have to be more careful when walking so as not to fall.
You can't reach that top shelf anymore.
You can't bend or get back up as easily.
You don't have the finances that you had when working.
Your friends are starting to pass away more regularly.
Young people think you're stupid because you're old and some treat you that way.
Your health, eyesight and hearing start to deteriorate.
You don't have the strength you used to even to open a jar or a can.
Housework becomes more of a chore than the pleasure it may have been once.
You tend to have far less patience especially when it comes to children.
And last but not least the sex drive seems to almost disappear.

I can certainly understand where she's coming from.

There is certainly a dark side to getting old, but the good news is that you can overcome much of it...if you plan ahead.

Being healthy and active well into your senior years is quite possible. Practice healthy lifestyles...because what you do to your body today, will most certainly show up positively or negatively after years of accumulated effect.

Save for your retirement...don't be like many youth and spend it as quickly as you get it. Get into the habit NOW of putting a little away out of each paycheck.

It is terrible. It's true to say life is what you make it but when 1 in 5 old people can't afford to heat more than one room in their house it isn't just so easy to get out and do things to make your life more interesting.

As well as some elderly people living on the brink of poverty, they have to cope with unimaginable loneliness. A lot of elderly people don't live near their families and may be widowed and due to the lack of community spirit now, their neighbours don't know them and probably don't care.

I have seen elderly people in the past living near me and you have no idea how isolated and alone many of them feel especially around the holiday period and I do feel sorry for them. It is a societal problem that must be addressed sooner rather than later because one day we may end up old and alone and it will be too late for us to try and change it.

If anyone knows of anybody living in their community who does live alone, take 30 minutes out of your week to visit them or offer to help them to the shops. A little extra kindness in the world wouldn't go amiss and you will feel far better than just throwing a pound in a collection box!

Im a nurse and have on occassion worked and done placements in nursing hokmes with the elderly, and also been out on the community visiting many elderly patients. I won't go into details for obvious reasons but it is truly shocking that some of our elderly can live and be treated in the manner that I have witnessed.

We should scrap all the benefits for ANY foriegner, scrounger and chav scumbag with fifteen kids all named diamonique or Britney or other variation thereof and at least double the pension and provide better health care for them.

Yes it is sad for this lady and many others . But this is not universal as lots of older people go on to have a great retirement.
While you are young and earning good money you should always be thinking a bit ahead and putting some away to support you in later life . But many people as is there choice just live for the day , and many of those self same people then complain that they struggle in later life . You can't always have your cake and eat it too

The elderly suffer from failing health, they are in pain, most of there loved ones have passed away leaving them lonely. In America it's a young peoples world, they are the wise ones. The old people are stupid, to be forgotten in an old folks homes, to hurry up and die leaving the kids a pile of money.

I don't know, pensioners these days are a lot better off than our parents and grandparents were. I'm 67 and well healthy for my age,I go swimming twice a week, and can travel free whenever I want also we can eat well and it's cheaper now to live than it was 30 or 40 years ago.

I think you will find thats what all old people say throughout the ages of time. Quite likley to have once heard a old victorian person say the same and so on as you travel back in time. People like to compare to what they have known because that is safer and if it is safer it is better.

Thats sad but just know that not all elderly people feel that way. Some actually are able to enjoy their latter years. Think positive.
