1. Never use poison because its an awful way to die..and if other pets get into it or eat the mice they die awful deaths as well.
2. If you must kill ...do so quickly with a snap trap baited with a bit of peanut butter ..carefully wind some sewing thread loosely around the peanut butter before you set the trap ..the mice get their teeth caught on the thread..it works every time.
3 If you have never put poison out get a cat :)

I had the same problem several years ago where I was living at the time. I worked out of town alot and would come to devastation. I tried the poison, it didn't work and the ones that did die stank up the whole place. Traps, yuck! I had to pick them up and blood would be spattered all over and that was really disgusting and I was spending a fortune on them because I sure wasn't going to take them off and re--use them. I just threw them away. I finally broke down and got a cat. Within a couple weeks there were no more mice.

Please don't use glue traps or poison. Glue traps are so cruel that they've actually been outlawed in some countries. Mice have been known to gnaw off their own limbs and tear off their skin in an effort to escape, as they starve or dehydrate to death or suffocate in the glue. It can take three to five days for them to die. If you find a live mouse stuck in a glue trap, you can put it in a box, pour vegetable oil around the mouse to loosen the glue, and gently push it off the trap with a pencil or spoon. Then, you can release it outside. Of course, this is messy and stressful for both you and the mouse, so it's better to not use them in the first place.
Poison isn't any better, as the mice die slowly and painfully from internal bleeding. It can take up to a week for them to die, and then they smell as they rot behind your walls.
I've had great success with this live trap in my house:
http://veganstore.com/index.html?stocknumber=266
It’s also available for $2 cheaper here (although I prefer to buy it from the other place since I’m not a big fan of PETA):
https://www.petacatalog.org/prodinfo.asp?number=HP200
I've caught over a dozen mice with it so far and it can be used over and over indefinitely. Or, you can try making the free homemade humane trap described here:
http://www.helpinganimals.com/wildlife_livingWithMice.asp
If you do live trap mice, please be sure to check the traps several times a day and release the mice promptly, approximately a mile away from your home. It is much more cruel to allow a mouse in a live trap to slowly starve to death than to kill it quickly with a snap trap. When you release the mice, do it in an area with some sheltering bushes or plants.
If you feel you must kill the mice, snap traps are the most humane alternative.

Here in the Dallas/Fort Worth area it's a brand called "Fox P" (or Pee). It is basically essence of fox urine. The fox is a natural predator and enemy of mice.
It only takes a few drops to do the job. Once the mice get a whiff of the odor they will be very reluctant to venture into that area.

I'm hesitant to use a bait not because I feel for the little things, but because they will crawl in some nook or cranny of your place and die, then stink for weeks.
I live in a forest. The best thing in the world that I have found is a snap-trap baited with a gummy bear (no kidding). Smash the gummy bear around the trigger until it molds to it. You can get many mice with one bear. Any other candy (caramel, tootsie roll) that you can smash onto the trigger likely would work as well, but the little bastards sure love gummy bears.

Get some Decon bait and put it out the mice eat it and go back to their nest and die. It causes them to dehydrate and there is no odor. Place it where pets and children cant get it . I have used it in apartments for years and it is the best. Put it like under the Fridge or in other tight spaces, they will find it.
Most people don't like traps because they have to empty the trap or throw them away and this could get expensive.Good luck
