Personally I believe that a ghost will remain until what need s to be done is done maybe even if the truth just needs to be told so that history is kept truthful maybe it is just because they are scared to go and hide in a familiar place it really depends on the type of ghost and what its past was though I mean... If a ghost comes like one time a year than maybe its just a visually manifested image of feeling and emotion revolved around an incident that takes place that day no matter how long back... you could have a ghost that walks the same pattern down the hall to the tub where it was drowned before it died and no one knows that there was someone else in the house so they thought she committed suicide and there for would not leave until what happened comes to justice though i can imagine that poltergeists could come from a further manifestation of the responsible person dies or commits suicide especially if it is in the same place... but as for all puzzles i believe there is a solution to the puzzle a ghost will not remain a ghost forever as well as a human will not remain human forever... everything dies when its life job is done and i think ghost are no exception...

No one really knows.. My opinion is that a spirit, ghost, entity or what ever you may wish to call it will be active for a certain amount of time until unfinished business is taken care of. And then the spirit will rest. My sister was killed in a car wreck and after she died her spirit was with us for almost a year. She would make stuff fall off the shelf and she had made a hanging shelf and it would start swinging until all the stuff fell off. A year on the anniversary of her death a refrigerator she had just bought quit and could not be fixed. At that time I believe her spirit rested.
My dad was shot and killed in our front yard. I was 8 at the time and his spirit was active in the same way for a long time. We would hear people walking and talking outside and go out there and there would be no one there. I was once playing and heard his distinct footsteps walking towards me on the concrete. And there were many more incidents.

my personal opinion....... I know I dont have a clue, and I dont think anyone else does either. At this point, we are only slightly more knowlegable about ghosts then we were 500 years ago. We can predict with slight regularity where or when one might show up. But as for what makes one tick?

Since there is no testable evidence it's really not possible to objectively determine a.) whether ghosts exist, b.) what causes ghosts and c.) if they exist, how long they stick around. So really any answer you get will be 100% speculation.

I agree with a lot of what the other posts have said. As a side note: a ghost can finish their business, there have been family members of mine that have not passed on until saying goodbye. Each one had their own way to get their intent across. One wouldn't leave until the family told him that he didn't belong here anymore and that he needed to move on.
Personally, if I decided to stick around it would be to bug all the people I love (just like in real life!). Until I got bored, I wouldn't move one either.

Well, assuming they don't have unfinished business and they've crossed over, they stay that way until they reincarnate again.

But if you mean if they DO have unfinished business and haven't crossed over yet...yeah, they'll stay that way, wandering, forever if they don't cross over. I had a young man who died in the 1700's and only crossed over a couple of years ago.

it might worry me if god became out to be percentman and that i had to attempt to chase him yet then while he became blue i might would desire to run away so he did no longer devour me. Does the regulation of thermodynamics count huge type as an more suitable power? What approximately gravity? i think of i think in those.

I think that the ghost will stay as a ghost until the 'unfinished business' has been resolved.

Among ghost experts there is no agreement about it.There's not much agreement on any of the ghostly goings on.Just pick one of the opinions you read.Better yet make one up of your own. You're just as unlikely to be right as anyone else.
