419 Scam .

This is a type of 'Advanced Fee Fraud' .. essentially they ask you to pay for the delivery of money/goods whatever (Lottery Winnings is the usual excuse = amazing how many people fall for that - I mean, do morons REALLY think they can 'win' lotteries without buying a ticket or giving some-one their email address ?)

Anyway, if you are LUCKY nothing turns up .. if you are unlucky a cheque turns up ... and they then 'take you' to the next step of the scam ..

Whoopee you think .. but wait a moment = there is some mistake == they have 'over-paid' you = the Cheque is for much more than expected !.

Of course they soon 'realise' there has been 'an error' and ask you to send the overpaid amount (less some 'handling' costs that you can 'keep') back via Western Union (or some other non-reversible means)

Well you Bank the cheque and the money appears in your account !!

Fantastic you think .. so you knock off 10% and send them the 'overpaid' amount as requested ..

A few weeks (or months) later the Cheque 'bounces' and your Bank reverses the credit ..

.. Western Union finds it very funny when you ask them to get your money back ...

A few weeks or months after that you will get another email, this time from the "Nigerian 419 Compensation Department" or some-such - they will reimburse you !

... but first you have to pay some investigation costs / case handling charges / cheque courier fee ..... (is this starting to sound familiar ?)

.. finally after all direct attempts to milk you for money have been exhausted your details are sold on to the Identify Theft criminals ...

.. and then the fun REALLY starts (do you know how EASY it is to re-mortgage your house without you knowing ? - ask the Land Registry = they have paid out £12million so far in compensation)
