I am starting a web hosting company and would like to know what stresses the system will be dealing with mainly, what kind of processor would be suitable? is there any point going for a quad core prossessor as there wont be many applications running?

If say 500-1000 users were connecting what would be the biggest issue in terms of hardware? ...RAM...CPU...Disk speed?....

cheers

chris

And how much bandwidth does your "web-hosting company" have?

Seriously, you don't need raw CPU power to server web pages. You need fast storage and lots of bandwidth.

Try to have a HP server or even IBM server with cisco router to go with a broadband modem. As your business extended, you would add more servers.

In fact, you should select a server with build-in router and broadband modem, if any available. more integrated, more secure.

You also need some QoS software to go with OS. Those can increase virtual bandwidth.

Ensure you also have a strong anti-virus and anti-spyware. All customers information must be encrypted for protecting their privacy. There must be a log for all access activities.

You also need a backup systems, in case anything gone wrong.

Last but not least, you need to have a privacy policy and security policy to government your company. All files in web-servers must be read-only.
