Going back to school to get masters? Heres the catch...?

I'm broke, I have over $30,000 in student loans and I am stuck doing admin assistant work,which I am not good at. Single partent, I don't have a job right now ( I have been looking for the past 3 months), I would like to get a masters in marketing and finance and also minor in music. I do have a B.S in business management. I keep getting offers to sell life insurance. Coming from the usa.

* $30K isn't such a bad amount of student loan debt for a good BS. If that's a serious concern for you though, a master's is only going to add to it. Getting additional loans for graduate study is usually not a difficult process.

* Consider that you aren't "stuck" doing admin asst. work as much as you are fortunate to be doing any work.

* Being a single parent has little bearing on any of this issue. At one time in the not too distant past that may have been a barrier to success, these days about 1/3 of all families is headed by a single parent. It's a "normal" condition now.

* 3 months isn't all that long to have been looking for a job. There's a rule of thumb that tells us that it will take about one month per $10K of desired salary to find a job. That assumes you're looking in the right place for the right jobs. There's nothing wrong with selling insurance - some people like it. That's a pretty easy job to find though (as is Real Estate sales) since the employer really isn't out much if you aren't any good at it - it's a commission sales type job.

* Marketing and finance are two very different majors at the master's level. You're either talking two master's or a generalist MBA if you want to study both. Most master's (especially in business) don't offer enough degree freedom for a true "minor" as you think of it. Might I suggest that if you want to study marketing, finance, and music at the graduate level that you might be interested in Arts Administration or Music Business as a major.

* Your BS in Business Management is a good degree to have these days but it only has true value with industry specific experience to go with it. Stand-alone, it doesn't have the utility you might like. Gather some experience and you'll begin to appreciate that degree more.

There are very many benefits to getting your master's. Increased earning potential is one of them. Simply having a master's without much work experience (especially an MBA or biz MA) isn't going to help your job search all that much though. A finance master's will open some doors for you.

Your question doesn't tell us what sort of job you're looking for. If you haven't already, you need to clearly define for yourself what industry you're wanting to work in. We tend to have much less success when we're looking for "any good job" as opposed to a specific type of job in a specific industry.
