This is the scenario, Solid concrete floors which are covered in click wooden flooring, (great job ) Double glazing (airtite ) A tight fitting door. A gas fire.
For the fire to burn it requires air, when the door is closed , where does the air come from ? In their wisdom the " powers that be " decided that every room with a gas fire should have a vent to replace this air.
There are alternative ways to counteract this, you could install a vent at ceiling level not outside but into the hallway with the louvres pointing towards the ceiling. OR a vent at floor level leading outside and in close proximity to the fire, ( They can be obtained )
Whatever method you still require AIR, so as not to kill yourself.

The gas boiler needs fresh air. It should get this through an intake pipe but sometimes these get blocked. The boiler then cannot perform the combustion process efficiently and starts to make Carbon Monoxide. If this leaks into the house and cannot escape, it will kill you. It is odourless - you won't know until it is too late.

People die every year from Carbon Monoxide poisoning. There was a well publicised case last Christmas of a family on holiday. The heating in their chalet was faulty and they all died in their beds.

Natural gas needs twice as much air to burn compared to the old towns gas. Gas fires burn a mixture of gas and air, and if you cut of the air supply by sealing the vent, the fire will be burning only gas which will be a dirty yellow flame. This results in "sotting up" the appliance and cause deadly Carbon monoxide poisoning. It is important to keep any air vents open to prevent this happening.

combustion ventilation is a must.the air supply is is needed because the boiler, which must have an open flue requires 10m3 of oxygen to burn 1m3 of gas, thats quite a lot of air.if there is a lack of air supply the gas will not burn properly, which will cause a carbon build up(soot) forming on the heat exchanger.once the heat exchanger is choked with soot the flue gases will then start to spill in to the room, which unless the gas appliance has an atmospheric sensing device will make you very ill or kill you depending on the levels you are exposed to.you can upgrade the vent, and have one fitted with a hood and draught blocker.try stadium wall vents.

The boiler needs air for combustion, if it does not have this, it cannot function properly and could kill you by carbon monoxide poisoning, the best you can do is place something in front of the vent at a distance where it is not blocked, (deflect the draught into a corner). don't block it off, you will have no idea what is happening if you cause carbon monoxide, you can't see it, smell it or taste it, that is why it is called the silent killer.

my mother wallpapered over the vent, and then while whatching tv one night slipped away, carbon monoxide poisoning was given as cause of death, you cant see it and you cant smell it,it dont blow up if you strike a light, but it realy does have a way of letting you know it exists.if u live alone you may not be found for weeks/months,and believe me its not a pleasent time for the people that walk into that home filled with bluebottles and a smell that i wish nobody ever had to smell, and maggotts wriggling away on a body already half eaten away!! are you a bit warmer now?

i know its cold these guys explained it to you it worries me when i hear of people doing this also any room with a open flue appliance should not be used to sleep in because of the dangers even if its checked annually.

please ensure it gets serviced to be safe it may seem like a waste of money but its easier to save than a life..

that vent was put there to keep you alive ..you must have a gas fire that draws the air out of the room to keep it going ..the vent is to replenish the air supply ..you could cause yourself some harm if you block it of ...leave it well alone

You need to have the vent replaced with the newer type that lets air out but not cold in, they are expensive but worth it, they filter the cold air coming in and warm it before it enters your room, look them up on the net. Just type in air bricks and chose one!

You should unseal them, it's dangerous to block the air vents up no matter how cold you are, the gasses wont be able to escape.
