Can someone make some suggestions? He isn't eating or moving and just sits in one corner. If I tap on the glass he'll react but that's about all. I tried looking online to find some symptoms of the sickness but couldn't find anything. He is old but I don't think that old. I have cleaned the tank and put fresh water with new filter. Is the water possibly to cold? Thanks in advance.

I'd say 17 is a good age for a goldfish - but they can live longer (the record is in the 40 year range!). You must be taking good care of him!

Yes, cold water can make your fish react more slowly, but goldfish prefer cooler temperatures. If this has just been happening since a recent water change, that may be your answer, especially if he perks up once the water warms a bit (you should try to match it with what's already in the tank).

Other "typical" causes for this behavior are poor water quality (buildup of wastes), too strong of water current (especially for fancy varieties with round bodies, double tails, and reduced swimming speed), or other fish picking on it (and it trying to stay out of their way). Disease/parasites are another possibility. But for any of these, the symptoms would come on gradually, and not necessarily coincide with a water change.

I would be willing to bet that this is due to his age. I had no idea they could live that long.
