After the loss of the 2 discs containg bank details and other sensative information,,so 7 + million letters cost ( with stamps, production of those letters and man hours) at least £1 per letter. That`s another 7+ million pounds wasted, along with the costs of propping up Northern Rock at an estimated cost of £900 per UK tax payer how much more wasted money will it take for the government to start sacking those responsible?

If the Government are sending 7 million letters to families whose details were on the missing disks, what about the other 19-20 million. According to a report there were well over 20 million sets of details lost or 'mislaid'

On top of that why do they need to send letters to reassure those families? They have already informed them via the various media outlets, newspapers TV etc.

So why the need to duplicate it. I am sure virtually all those whose details were on the disks already know about it.

With regard to propping up or investing vast amounts of money in companies who invariably collapse again very quickly. They get themselves in the situation, why should I be expected to pay out for their short-lived survival. I have no investments in this company, so why should I to pay toward bailing them out. I would rather give my part of the money to an infinitely more deserving cause.

Think of all the operations that could be performed, police or teachers who could be employed with the money the Government are quite happily throwing away.

I feel very sorry for all those normal people who have lost their hard earned savings by investing in Northern Rock, but unfortunately nowadays any company could collapse, including banks and other investment companies, as we have seen. It is unfortunately a risk we take when 'trusting' our money to these people and companies.

For those 'fat cat companies who have lost money, I will not and have not lost one seconds sleep over their loss. But I bet they are the ones kicking up the biggest stink to the Government and that is the people the Government are listening to, not the genuine small infester.

Oh heck, the Government have stolen my pension, cut my wages, lost my savings, plundered anything of value I had, I am working 7 days a week already. I am terrified of getting old or ill and ending up in Hospital because they will take my home. I cannot afford any more let alone letters, stamps and jobs for the boys to sort out another mess. Do you think they could spare a few of those stamps for my Christmas card list, I have gone over it again and again to cut it right down to a handful taking into consideration the cost!

Edit: Good answer Shambo, I got my elderly uncle a super card last year (a naughty old fashioned one) it did not arrive, he was so disappointed and thought I had forgotten him.

How can they possibly reassure people when they still don't know where the discs are???

I really can't understand why the Government can waste such a crazy amount of money when there are so many other issues that need money, and they can easily issue something along the lines of a party political broadcast. Surely they should start an enquiry before spending more money?

The mix up occurred because the departments were worried about the cost of producing the information i.e. which department would be billed for the information.

I therefore ask which department's budget will be paying for the 7 million letters. The civil service works to stupid budgetary targets set by the government - THE GOVERNMENT SHOULD RESIGN

I'm sure we'll have a postal strike before those letters get delivered....
I mean, with all those extra letters to deliver, risk assessments surely must be drawn up in case our postman gets a bad back, or bumps into a hard Labour supporter.
Why can't we sack the government?
There's a revolution coming ;-)

Talk about closing the door after the horse has bolted - how can they possibly reassure people with a letter especially after what happened?

This government have brought in a cracking saying:-
NOT FIT FOR PURPOSE.
Perhaps they should look at top civil servants, and of course them selves. I heard a cracker this morning on tv:- people should not be refused jobs, on the grounds that they cannot speak English. Who thinks up these ideas?

it's been my experience that governments don't really care how much money they waste -- it's not coming out of the personal pockets of the decisionmakers --- it's the taxpayers and unless they vote their lost dollars out of the hands of these guys or riot in the streets, it's business as usuall
