I think a 1 year of training pilot is more for recreational flying and not for earning much money. To fly for an airline requires much more, and I believe most start in the military before going to commercial airlines.

Becoming a private pilot is not that hard or expensive, but that only allows you to fly a single engine light aircraft with only 3 passengers in good weather. To actually get a multi engine commercial license that would allow you to fly for the airlines it would probably cost $45k +, and even then you still need upwards of 2000 hours to get hired as a pilot for a big airline.

Very good question. My boyfriend is a flight instructor and teaches his students to fly sports planes. It's a new pilot's liscense that you can get in half the time of a private or commercial liscense. But, to answer your question, it does take alot of work to get your private or commercial liscence, but it's completely worth it. The reason you don't see a great deal of pilots is that it takes a certain type of person and strict discipline to become a pilot, plus a substancial amout of money. If you would like more info on becoming a sport pilot, visit www.marathonaviation.com. It gives you details about getting it. And perhaps you can find out about it in your area. Hope I helped.

Yeah, fair point. I was a personal advisor in careers for years and not one person ever told me they wanted to be a pilot! LOL

its still a big investment though to become a pilot.

But we all know how expensive it is just to have ordinary driving lessons - cost hundreds and hundred of pounds.

If you go to air cadets as a kid or join RAF then I suppose you don't have to worry about that.

PLus, being a pilot, unsocialable hours, heights and huge responsibility!
