There isn't a one size fits all meaning for Christmas. Perhaps we should think it's sad that people need to have an excuse to buy a new sofa or bathroom that they really need or want. "Best Ever" is a little high to aim for. No one really needs the best ever, just the best that can be made.

Well I agree with you that a sofa can hardly make it the best Christmas ever.
However I think a lot of it is down to beliefs. Our family are not particularly religious so we remember why we have Christmas (the birth of Christ) but use it as an excuse to get the family together and exchange gifts.

The manufacturers of these products try to make us think that by having new blinds, windows, automatic folding beds etc will enable us to have the best Christmas. The ads get the volume turned down in our house as we hate them so much.To me and my family, Christmas is when my husband finishes up work for a few days.Plenty of good food in the house, family all together in front of the fire with a box of chocs. All just chilled out and enjoying each others company. This time last year I was in hospital suffering from a blood clot after an operation that almost killed me.It made us all in the family take stock and see what really is important in life, and it sure isn't material stuff.
EDIT:Thank you for the thumbs down, have a nice materialistic Christmas.

Christmas is the celebration of Jesus Christ's birthday.
Many decorations and traditions have been borrowed from various sources.
There is much debate on the date of His birthday. The point is that a date was chosen to celebrate Christ's birthday and the point of the holiday wasn't borrowed.
Christmas has unfortunately become TO MANY PEOPLE just a materialistic time of year. Add to the craziness encountered at the sales and the mad rush for the hot item of the year and it is insane.
Peace and love to your fellow man and helping those in need are out there but not as much as you one could hope.
Christmas is about a child in a manager and the grace we are given through Him. It is about love and helping those in need. It is about family.
My best Christmas didn't involve the gifts. It didn't involve the craziness. It simply involved being "stranded" with family and friends and the outpouring of love during that time (our car broke down while we were out of state and did not have the finances to get it fixed).

christmas to many people is just a holiday and an expectation of loads of presents, but i feel its a time to spend with your family and the people u love most, and remembering that good food, and a happy day spent laughing and smiling with your loved ones is much better than spending a day alone with a load of presents, most of which are forgotten about soon after.

Christmas should be about Jesus Christ .
A lot of people who celebrate Christmas arnt even Christians .
They should change its name and call it a family holiday .
The best times I have had are the ones spent with my family not stressing over how much we have spent one child or the other and stressing over things like have you got the right logo on the top .yes all this spending has got out of control.we must go back to the basics .FAMILY and god if you believe in him .

We have. Even though everyone looks forward to Christmas, at least most, I bet half of the people don't look forward to celebrating Jesus' birthday. Instead of giving gifts to Jesus (perhaps giving money to a church or spending a few days trying to turn others into Sheep) we only give gifts to ourselves. I hate to say it but Jesus' birthday isn't the first thing on my mind when I wake Christmas morning. I really should be a better Christian.

Yes - A Christmas left alone by Christians!!!
It is a midwinter festival mixed with other European and pagan festivals. The Christians tried to hijack it by moving their festival to the same day.
What does that say about Christianity? They prefer to worship a pagan festival and ignore the true dates for the birth of their Savior!!!!!!!
What is more - non Christians are inclusive and loving at Christmas unlike Christians who appear selfish and try to dictate who can enjoy Christmas or not!!!!
