It's strange, 3 of my favorite bands broke up years ago (The Pixies, as you mentioned, The Meat Puppets, and Dinosaur Jr.) yet got back together when I did not think there was a chance.

Other than that though, most of my favorite bands have broken up, or at least have a different line-up than when they first started. Of the bands listed below, I really don't think there's a chance any of them will reunite but the upper part of the answer disproved anything that I know. (I'm hoping I will jinx myself and they will all reunite).

The Replacements
Husker Du
Uncle Tupelo
Jawbreaker
Guided by Voices
Fugazi

Hope you had a great Thanksgiving!!

Edit: It's funny, not long after I wrote this, the one radio station I like played The Murder City Devils. Too bad they broke up, that's one good band (or at least from what I could tell from the one song). Did anyone from there go on to form Zeke?

As for The Descendents, they've always been known to break up for a while so Milo can work on his research. Talk about your variety, botanist by day, punk rocker by night!

Wow, someone copied my whole answer. That's nuts. I don't know Sookie, it might just be a stalker.....

And I'll give Smiley a thumbs up for dealing with all the negativity. He can't help it if it's the truth.

Edit x 2: It doesn't seem so Mach. I knew both were from Seattle but I compared the band members and there was no overlap so it was just a false alarm. Check out their myspace page though, their bassist went on to Pretty Girls Make Graves, the drummer to Big Business.....it has it all on there.

Edit x 3: Smiley, I hear you. It can be a tough go in the R&P rooms at times.

Aside from Psychotica, I'll take every band that BC listed. My Bloody Valentine has been teasing their fans with rumors of a new album for almost twenty years. It's become something of a joke in the industry and I no longer take it seriously. Add these to the mix.

Fugazi - technically not really broken up but a long hiatus. Might as well as well call it what it is.
Jawbox
Quicksand
Jane's Addiction
Band of Susans
Cop Shoot Cop - I forgot all about these guys!

So, Mommy and Daddy are indeed broken up after all, that's too bad.

Hi :)

Kind of surprisingly, not that many of my favourite bands have broken up. I guess this just reflects the fact that a lot of the music I listen to is pretty recent.

One band, however, that I wish hadn't split is The Immediate. They only released one album, "In Towers and Clouds", which I really loved a lot, and I would have loved to have seen where they went with their sound. I've never been too clear on the reason for their split, so I can't really say if they'll ever get back to together, but I doubt it.

Another one, which doesn't quite qualify as a break up, is Lisa Hannigan and Damien Rice's decision not to collaborate in the future. It's a shame, cause she's a really amazing vocalist, and really enhances his songs. And by the sounds of things, they definitely won't be reconciling.

Good evening Adam :) Dire Straits {they didn't actually 'break up' ~ Mark officailly disbanded them in 1995} MQ: I knew one album and a few other songs. They didn't become a member of 'The List' until at least 10 years later. Led Zeppelin MQ: I wasn't born until 2 years later!

Actually most of my favorite bands with all living members are together. That's neat, you've given me something to be happy about!

Wait, the Velvet Underground are broken up and still alive, as well as the 13th Floor Elevators, the Voidoids, the Circle Jerks, the Angry Samoans, and do the Dead Kennedys count without Jello?

Oh and I don't know if they're officially broken up, but it doesn't seem like Milo is planning on getting back with the Descendents for awhile, although I wouldn't be surprised if he did, since there are no bitter feelings involved in their hiatus. Same thing with Rancid, although they're supposed to be recording an album for a long time now.

Which reminds me, Operation Ivy and Common Rider are both broken up and neither will reform almost certainly.

Barring bands who broke up due to death, I'd say Neutral Milk Hotel would be at the top of my list. Actually I didn't realize they had broken up until I was looking for concerts online, and noticed on wikipedia that they broke up 10 years ago, haha.

Stabbing Westward
Jack Off Jill
Psychotica
I doubt these 3 will ever get back together.

However, that's not the case for two of my favorite bands. I read that My Bloody Valentine and The Jesus and Mary Chain have both reunited and both bands plan to record an album, so that's a plus!
