I am currently using comodo antivirus and it seems pretty good so far. There are other things to try as well there but I found the firewall to be too complicated for me so I can't recommend that one. For checking for viruses and spyware, try the second link, house trend where you can get a free scanand removal of viruses and trojans. Hope these help you.

There is BitDefender (No.1 Anti-Virus Program according to http://anti-virus-software-review.toptenreviews.com

http://download.bitdefender.com/windows/free/winfree/en/bitdefender_free_v10.exe

There is Kaspersky (No.2 Anti-Virus Program)

There are 30 day trials so I'm not giving the direct link

There is ESET Nod32 (No.3 Anti-Virus Program)

http://download1.eset.com/eval/win/eav/eav_nt32_enu.msi
(It's a 30 day trial but, you should install it. When scanning and you find a virus visit this website and click on the name of the virus found with ESET Nod32 and hit download. http://www.eset.com/download/free-virus-remover.php)

I strongly reccomend AVG Anti-Virus. (I use it all the time)

http://free.grisoft.com/filedir/inst/avg75free_503a1205.exe

and I also stringly reccomend AVAST! Anti-Virus (It also comes with a website scanner and scans for viruses on a website and it has a scary sort of sound played when a virus is detected)
http://files.avast.com/iavs4pro/setupeng.exe

(DO NOT DOWNLOAD ALL THE ANTI-VIRUS MENTIONED ABOVE OR YOUR COMPUTER WITH LAG AT START UP AND YOU WILL HARDLY BE ABLE TO DO ANYTHING! THIS HAS HAPPENED TO ME BEFORE)

AVG is easy to use but it has one the worst Virus detection
Avast is just a little bit better at virus detection but it use too many resources on your PC
The best Free Antivirus is Avira Antivir PE here : http://www.free-av.com/

>>It's just easy to use, offers much better virus detection than both avg and avast and it doesn't take much resource.

AVG is the best you can get for free
our school has lots of security on our servers
but each student has the free version of AVG installed on our laptops.

Anything that is free is also weak.
Kaspersky Internet Security is the best
It's free to try but then you must buy
