In my town, they run them through a big shredder with other green waste then compost the wood chips with sewer plant solids to be sold for landscape mulch. Composting is accelerated and closely monitored and takes about 6 weeks. It is amazingly sweet smelling and a great soil amendment.

With the way the price of heating oil is going, I'm sure some folks will be turning their live trees into firewood after the holiday's over. Depending on the size of the tree, probably won't get terribly much out of it but every little bit helps keep you warm for as long as it lasts.

Some communities actually take the trees & put them in lakes. The trees serve the environment very well that way. It gives fish good cover for spawning.

I would presume they either go into a compost pile, or the landfill. Or they burn them.
