I am in my 60's and I have worked for M&S for over 2 years - I have found them to be extremely bad employer because they discriminating against older works, their line managers are very badly trained or perhaps they are trained to discriminate against certain people who are vulnerable. M&S line managers bully their older employees and have no respect for them. M&S flaunt their life style options but do will only let certain people to tale advantage of these life style options. In the store that I am working in they are just awful to older employees, especially if these employees knows their employment right, M&S will do their utmost to get rid of them.

I also work in retail. I've found that they don't like you to have an opinion. But if you havn't got a union to back you there's not alot you can do. The older you are, the harder it is to get another job. And they know that. Good Luck.

As you say, you are in your 60's; you should think about retirement. Unfortunately, I have to say that because you are pointing your finger to a highly credited company, which was in the top credit list of Chartered Institution of Marketing.

Unfortunately, the principle of those mechanism would place customers to their first place. To survive, you have to win the customer's delight. There is a strict performance evaluation which ensure the goal for custmer's delight would be achieved.

Therefore, those mid-level managers are under extreme stress to achieve. The only way is to press employee to go beyond their limit.

Such mechanism just forgot the importance to treat their empolyee as their internal customers. Each employee is actually buying service from other employees, i.e. team work and team spirit.

I haven't shopped there for years. Ghastly lot. Apparently they source some of their stock from the same third world production lines as Primark. Difference is Primark charge the right price. Not just a con, it's an M & S con !! If they bully you just be nasty back. I have found managers always go looking for a softer target because at the end of the lower levels of management are just as disposable as you are. Never forget that, and the fact that most companies don't want problems.

Last week I visited it and when I was waiting my friend on the till, I sense the smell of shiit, I looked around, there where a toilet nearby and the smell must had come from there. Indeed, but from there up to the way out was a tray of toilet paper and shiit on the floor! Very disgusting, for sure lack of good management, care.
