It is a design of a Suba (hand guard on a samurai sword (katana)) and is of a dragon coming out of water and going into fire. I would very much appreciate your help.

Maybe it looked better than a flat piece of metal. Swords were designed for function and not necessarily for looks. And the katana is definitely one well designed weapon as was the Roman short sword. Spanish swords of the same vintage are truly works of art as well. The embellishments added nothing to the function. Has anyone seen a decorated kukuri? Now there's a blade!

Your own power to conquer evil! But keep a good grip on the sword, till you are sure it's evil coming out of the protective and friendly medium of water: it could be a friendly being looking for friendship and shelter from you, coming out to invite you to the great realm of water as a friend! The fire may be just to keep you warm, not to harm you! The sword is there, anyway, just in case!

It would help if you showed us.

Dragons tend to be knowledge.
This almost sounds like the phoenix and not a dragon.
how many toes?

water is yin and fire is yang.

Japanese dragons yang live in water yin

.. but might be roused to change...?.. roused to meet their mate?

Japanese phoenix are yin, but live in fire .. yang

However, they're also often depicted together in artwork as partners. The Dragon is the male counterpart to the female Phoenix, and together they symbolize both conflict and wedded bliss -- the emperor (dragon) and the empress (phoenix).
