Why just GIVE them the answer? How does that help them learn? I understand HELPING a student by guiding them, pointing them in the right direction so they can research their question and find the answer themself.

C'mon people, don't just do their homework for them!

Granny, I have no problem with helping a student. I DO have a problem when people just do a student's work for them. How will they learn anything that way?

I don't give the answers but give good information on where they could find sites for their research.

Dear, this is what I had asked masses to comment. Believe me I am still getting comments on my personal yahoo ID (not through yahoo answers). most of them are in favor of this help. As a retired teacher I know that one can learn only when he/she exerts over a problem to its extreme. It's not so important that he/she is successful in solving the problem ; but it is very important that during the course of solving the problem, he/she learns many methods.

I would like to elaborate my point. Suppose there are 5 ways for reaching a goal (B) from a point (A) along with a dozen others not leading to (B) . Now if a person (Mr X) is asked to reach the goal (B) starting from (A), he may have to try many times for a success. Now imagine - there is Mr helper (knowing the geography of the place very well), who comes forward to help Mr X. Well Mr X will, naturally, feel obliged and may tend to accept his help.

Well do you think Mr has really helped Mr X ? No this is not always true. By doing so Mr Helper has blocked a chance of learning other ways that lead to (B). Knowledge of other available ways could have helped Mr X in future. But there is one situation when this help is a boon. And that is when Mr X is short of time and gets help from Mr helper.

There is a natural law which guides these activities. This law says that man by nature is "Lethargic" and he/she follows the path of least resistance. If you find an except in, well his/her behavior is not natural.

I dare to comment (don't have proof to support my statement) that it is because of this reason that most of our European and American children are gradually loosing interest in subjects involving "Analytical" and "Logical" treatment.

I would also like to Quote one reply that I received - an incomplete solution to a question does not earn the BEST ANSWER award.

I am a retired elem teacher and I remember in high school and college, I'd get stuck on one problem and would stress over it, so if I can just pop out one answer, it is not big deal, As a retired teacher I can pretty much tell if they are just being lazy or need help., I think if we knew what grade they were in it would really help and I've often told them, if you would tell your grade, I would help you. Kids these days do not get their parents' help enough. The parents so often do not give their attention to their kids and also we have a lot of homeless kids in high school trying to survive alongside the ones that have comfy cozy homes LIfe isn't easy now.

well for one you don't know the students situation! sometimes they have too much to do to answer the question. Most of the time its just one question and If you give a detailed explanation then maybe they will learn to do what they are asking and maybe they just needed one example to get it! and if they are just taking the answers and not asking why and how then thats their problem when it comes to taking test or applying those concepts they will fail!

i ask for help if something baffles me! i bet that you didn't understand 100% of the things you were learning, and there are plenty of times where (as an ap student) i'll miss something in my text despite reading it about 500 times! i need help so i ask. its rare, but happens. there are kids out there who aren't able to understand a concept until they get the answer and have to figure out where it came from... most of the time, people ask for help in the context of getting explanations but not having you write the paper for them. and the students who don't learn end up working in jobs at minimum wage because they fail out of college. its life, and people typically learn one way or another....

does it really matter??? I mean it's not like it will really "help" them on test and stuff it's just homework. And if they see the answer it sometimes helps them see how they got the answer.....or they will fail anyway whether they have help or not. I graduated High school w/ out doing any of my own homework and I still aced all the test on my own. Home work IMO is pointless and stupid. At least it was for me.

looking for the information using yahoo answers search ==> means they are trying to find the answer by themselves. So why not answering them. It would resemble what I do in real life, if a student asked me for help, I will do my best, as long as I feel that he/she are not lazy student who want me to do his/her homework to find more time waste.

As a rule I will put them in the right direction give an excerpt from the link and the URL.
They can finish it.
My suggestion to you is, if you don't care for the way it's done by those that try to help then select another category and rid yourself of the aggravation.

People answers for them because homework is not all that serious matter in life. It's OK to have fun with it.

Exactly. But then again it's the student's choice to either take the answer or to discard it and try to figure it out on their own. Most might, and like you said, they won't learn.
