I'm doing an essay on a book about a sixteenth century love story, "The Wife of Martin Guerre".
Gotta write an essay on wheter personal happiness or truth is more important, in relation to that book.
I've been thinking bout it and I reckon that truth is more important, because you can derive happiness from truth.

Wondering if I could hear your own opinions and if you could drop a few ideas as to how i could write my essay.
thanks =]]

I'm 56, was an elem teacher and I am a very honest truthful person. It has caused heart ache at times, but in this long life I have found that "the truth really does set you free", but one also has to consider, say if you are going to tell your spouse honestly that you had an affair, I think you really need to think through how you are going to do it,not to cover your butt but in order to not hurt them horribly, especially if you care for them as a human, but holding in lies and deception will eat you like battery acid, You may think you are getting away with it forever, but you won't, What goes around comes around.

I saw the move that had Richard Gere playing the impostor. I think Truth is the present, the now, and knowing truth is more important than happiness. In the woman's case, the marriage to her real husband had changed when she became more in love with the impostor than him. However, the ethics of leaving her husband for a man impersonating him would be wrong and she should resist her love for the impostor. People get married and take a vow to honor each other their entire lives, and during a lifetime one is most likely going to be attracted to another and maybe even fall in love, and that's what taking a vow of marriage is all about. It happens quite often to people, but they resist the temptation.

Truth is more important than happiness. But in some instances truth may not be the best way to handle things, depending on the person/situation.
