They are in proportion to crimes committed by different races.

40-50% of crime is committed by African Americans
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Race_and_crime#United_States

40% of inmates are African American
http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/bjs/crimoff.htm#jail

So the solution is to lower black crime rates ...
which generally means increasing their incomes ...
which is usually done thru education and jobs ...
or we can take into account the traditions of African American culture and sponsor more basketball teams and rap bands.

I will say that these figures are mostly correct. I notice alot of aggression in black men..maybe due to the music they listen to and just plain frustration in life. Also they grow up in households without fathers..

I know there is no excuse especially when a black man has in some way hurt or harmed you or your family. But last week i heard that the jails are 44% black and 50% white and 6% spanish. I mean whites still commit the most crime but its not such a portion of its population like just 5%...with blacks its like 10%.

Solution would be to stop bunching all blacks together...dont force them to live in the innercity or the ghetto together..poor people are more apt to have gangs and turfs because everyone is scraping. Rap culture needs to just go away. which is wishful thinking because white kids still buy it and there is a mkt for it. But it needs to get greatly watered down and not so hardcore. Being in the ghetto is not a GOOD thing its bad ..and many black kids can't seem to understand this. You try to get out.

In the U.S.A. black men are imprisoned out of proportion.
In Canada Native men are imprisoned out of proportion.
It is not because of color, but rather that they find themselves at the bottom of the economic scale in each case. In time they should rise towards the top,and find themselves in proportion to the rest.

Ending the War on Drugs will definitely cut that number down tremendously

Most of the jail population is there on drug related charges and although black people make up 14% of the drug using population we end up being 63% of those jailed for it

Even though black people commit the most crimes, it is the War on Drugs that is the reason why so many of us are in jail

Well some solutions are as another poster stated stop racial profiling. Also most of these men probably came from single parent homes and are high school drop outs. So there should definitely be more emphasis on education and more community outreach programs such as mentoring. Oh and there should definitely be some after school programs. I'm sure if many of these young kids and teens had somewhere to go after school or while their parents were at work they wouldn't be in the streets committing crimes.

sad - but at least on this note they are finally make crack cocaine and powder cocaine charges equal. This had a lot to do with the initial spike in out of proportion sentencing.

i think people who do crimes may not have had the best place to live when they were younger.
I hate to judge or stereotype or anything so i'll avoid that
but maybe if the people who became criminals had bad influences. just saying :)

they're out of proportion because they only have dumbells and barbells and their upper body gets all the workout........the more time they get, the more disproportioned they look..........
and therein lies your cause.

Yes. When other races commit the same crimes, blacks are more likely to be prosecuted and serve time.
