I am going to have my 1st ultrasound when I am 8 weeks pregnant. I am wondering, if you had an ultrasound around then- did they have to do a vaginal ultrasound to see the baby, or could they see with an abdominal ultrasound?

They will likely start with an abdominal ultrasound. If your bladder is really, really full (drink 24 - 32 oz of water an hour before the ultrasound...then hold it), then it is possible to see the baby. If your bladder isn't full or doesn't push your uterus up far enough to get a clear picture, then they will likely move to the vaginal ultrasound. It is not as bad as it sounds! I think babies look like gummy bears at 8 weeks...big head, big body and little stubby limbs! :) Good luck!

Ultrasound At 8 Weeks

I didn't get any ultrasounds with my first pregnancy and won't with this one either. There is no reason to get one that early in your pregnancy. Unless you want to find out the gender (the best time is around 21 weeks) or something is obviously going wrong, you don't need an ultrasound at all. Ultra sounds have become routine merely because people in general expect them to happen and they make the hospital or doctor more money. Sorry if this comment is no help, I know Ultrasounds can bring people peace of mind and its cool to see the baby. I just thought I would comment so people know, if they are a low risk pregnancy, they don't have to get one if they don't want to.

At 8 weeks, an abdominal ultrasound is usually done, not transvaginal. You should be able to see the tiny baby and baby's heart beat. Naturally, if it is hard to see or measure, they can do a transvaginal ultrasound afterward as well.

you should have a abdominal ultrasound , They should be able to see the baby at this stage. I had one around 6 weeks this time and they could see the baby fine.
With my other lot I had one at 8 weeks also.

Good luck Congrats

This really varies from woman to woman. They may begin with an abdominal ultrasound, but don't be surprised if they then have to try vaginally. For what it's worth, the vaginal ultrasound isn't painful or anything.

Congratulations on your pregnancy!

typically anytime you are under 12 weeks, it is a vaginal ultrasound. I am 8.5 weeks pregnant and I have already had 2. They don't hurt at all, and at 8 weeks you will be able to see/hear the heart beat.

Good luck!

They did a vaginal on me at 8 weeks. Then, I had to go back at 9 weeks and they did an abdominal.

However, you should find out before you go, because if you're having an abdominal, you will need to drink alot of water beforehand!

They can do an abdominal ultrasound, but may need to do a transvaginal if they have a hard time seeing.
