How to avoid sea sickness if your prone to it...
Stay off the water.

How to reduce the chances of being sea sick if you are prone to it...

Breath fresh air.
Don't inhale fumes.
Stay away from exhaust gases from the engine.

Stay near the center of motion.
Generally midships somewhere.
Fish from the side and not from the stern that will move up and down with every wave that rolls beneath you.

Keep an eye on the horizon.
This will not give you all sorts of weird feedback.

It's mostly about the inner ear.
That is what tells you where gravity is pulling you.

If your below decks and your looking at a situation that your eye tells you is stable and your ears is saying is pitching all over the place, then the chances are that you might just start blowing chunks.

Don't volunteer to do the chumming.

Give your stomach something to do by eating non fatty foods like bread and crackers.

Take your mind away from your misery by pitching in and helping with the running of the boat in some way.

Persevere.
Horatio Nelson, one of the greatest admirals of the British navy spent the first month of any deployment he was on with "mal de mere"

You may want to start the voyage with a scopolamine patch until you get you sea legs or try some over the counter dramamine if you don't want to hit up you physician though.

The best way to avoid sea-sickness is to make sure you eat breakfast if your going out in the morning. And when you out at sea try to do something to distract yourself from the thought of being sick like fishing, drive the boat..ect. Also try to stay out of the cabin and get out in the fresh air and focus on the horizon with your head into the breeze and don't slump down and look at the floor. The main thing is don't let it beat you, don't go lay down or something, because then your giving in to it, it gets easier and eventually you'll find you wont get sick anymore. You can also try ginger or to chew on a few dry biscuits, and always drink plenty of water. When the boat is underway sit down the back as it's the smoothest ride as the bow of the boat cops the majority of the rise and fall action of the waves.

I have heard that sea sickness is caused by the fluid in your stomach sloshing around. My Aunt swears by have a couple dinner rolls or bread on hand when on a cruise or fishing, which causes the fluid to "settle down".
