It depends on how you keep score but the aphorism is true no matter which way you choose.

If you believe in the immortal soul and an afterlife, the point is clear.

If you do not, you still have to ask what the purpose of life is and it's not to accumulate trinkets or power. In the ART OF HAPPINESS, the Dalai Lama asserted that the purpose of life is to be happy. The "soul" in this case refers to your own personality and how it flourishes and what makes for happiness. Winning the whole world in and of itself would, for most people, not be that meaningful. If you believe Oliver Stone, Alexander's conquests didn't make him happy.

On the other hand, Genghis Khan seems to have been quite happy to spread his influence (and seed) over a good part of the world. You have to ask if your personality is like his. Hint: It's probably not.

Great, you win the whole world. Then when you want more, what are you going to do? You'll be depressed because you want more and more but you can't get it because you won the whole world...that's why you lose your soul.

Well to win the whole world could be great I guess but to lose your soul you die because you do not live without it. so.. I guess I would not be worth winning the whole world to lose your soul. Then when you die you would of course go to hell so what was it worth winning the whole world for?

the world is not worth having.

it is a metaphor. usually to gain the world(or a significant amount of power) you must sell your soul to get.
many men who have wealth have gained it at the expense of others. many people can be hurt physically, financially and emotionally by ones attempt to to achieve power.

if you are willing to sacrifice so many at any cost for your own greed than what type of person are you. usually you are someone who is morally inept, and you will burn in hell.
