I want the book, The Complete Works of William Shakespeare, but it seems like there are different versions (i.e. abridged, unabridged, alexander text ???). I just all the works in one book and in their original form. No abridging! But if the book comes with some sidenotes, definitions, introductions, pictures (etc), thats cool. but ultimatley i just want the original Shakespeare works! So what version would be best?

I just finished performing in the satirical play "The Compleat Wrks of Wllm Shkspr (Abridged)," but that's probably not the kind of thing you're looking for... Hmmm... anyways...

I recommend the Modern Library edition updated with help from the Royal Shakespeare Company.

However, since you seem to want the completely unaltered, unabridged, not updated version, this might be your best bet:

Plus, there a few used copies for $6 or $7.

I agree with Pip, however, the hardcover I'd recommend with its details is in the attached website. Both editors, Prof. Jonathan Bate & Prof.Eric Rassmussen have long been scholars in the field, therefore, they have provided readable and understandable meanings regarding obscure, outdated or difficult vocabularies used in Shakespeare's works. It won't disappoint you if you need to read & study the works academically.

The Riverside edition is my personal favorite, but I know good Shakespearean actors and directors who prefer either the Bevington or the Arden edition. Maybe there's a good library near you where you could check out some or all of those options to see which one you like best.

I just read the Merchant of Venice for school. I have read most of Shakespeare's works. The one that had the most effect on me was Othello...totally brilliant
