Happy Thanksgiving to all.
My question: If I drank a lot (like I have this evening)...several glasses of wine - and I were to find out later in the month (if I miss my period) that I am pregant, would this harm my child?

I am wondering all this b/c hubby and I had unprotected sex on 11/10 and I have been feeling tired, sore breasts etc..since...and it just occured to me..MAYBE I'M PREGANANT! Of course, if I were, I would drink NOTHING alcoholic. I haven't missed a period but just now have become suspicious of pregnancy.

Is it too early to "feel pregnant"? i am now upset b/c I drank so much tonight and now worry about it...If of course I am pregnant. Only a test will tell but what are your thoughts on drinking if I am 2 weeks along? At what point in pregnancy does alcohol reach the fetus with damaging effects?
Best/thorough answer = 10 pts. Thanks!

There are many conflicting studies out there.

Some state that a few glasses of wine, occassionally, near the end of the pregnancy is ok, but to avoid it during the beginning.

Others state that as long as the mother isn't an alcoholic (i.e., moderate drinking is ok, but constantly drunk isn't), it's ok.

Yet others state that women who are sexually active and of childbearing ages shouldn't even touch alcohol at all.

I would like to point out that hundreds of years ago, during the Medieval period and other historical eras, most people drank alcohol daily, rarely bathed, worked in dangerous factories, etc. while pregnant. Also, many pregnancies are unplanned surprises, so there's 1-3 months there of the mother engaging in normal activities.

Ultimately ... if you suspect that you're pregnant, reduce or abstain completely from alcohol until you've been tested and are positive that you're pregnant (blood tests are the most accurate).

ok I have to say, robin is crazy.
many MANY women drink not knowing there pregnant and there babies are fine. not saying its ok to drink, but I have many friends that didnt know until they were 2 months into it, and they drank for the first 2 months and were fine. they STOPPED drinking as soon as they thought they were pregnant though. nobody knows exactly how much alcohol harms your baby, none is good. I felt bad too, I didnt find out I was pregnant until I was 12 weeks, and I had some drinks. but as of right now my baby looks healthy and happy :)
so just dont drink anymore,
in NO WAY am I saying drinking while pregnant is ok, its totally wrong, you couldnt pay me to drink a glass of wine, but if your unaware your pregnant, and stop once you are aware, there should be no long term effects.

Hmm thats a hard question because there is no info on how much alcohol will hurt the baby. I wouldn't be to worried yet. I know its really hard to think about anything else if you think your pregnant. Its takes around 14 days for the hormone to show up in a test so I would get a test and she what it says if it shows up posititve go to your doctor and tell him about the wine. You can't turn back time now, I hope all works out good for you. Congrats if you are pregnant !!

I did the same thing. I got wasted on St. Patrick's Day one year and found out like 2 weeks later that I was PG. I told my O.B. about it right away, and she told me not to worry. She said it was too early in my pregnancy to have done any harm. I'm sure it's okay, but of course, talk to the doctor about it. I wouldn't drink anymore until I found out if I was indeed pregnant or not. Good luck.

If you are pregnant, I wouldn't think it would harm your baby since conception only took place 12 days ago. If you test and you are I hope you stay away from the alcohol.

Are you sure that it's just not the booze making you think your pregnant? It tends to amplify problems!!! I don't know the complications of one night of drinking but I don't know that it would have much of an effect if you don't drink constantly...Just cut the booze until you find out more...I hope for the best for you.

At this point, it would be OK, especially since you are at the MAYBE stage.

Not enough development has occur to have the alcohol cause a degree of impairment

If you think you might be pregnant, you definitely should stop drinking. But, any drinking you did before you knew you were pregnant shouldn't affect the baby.

Good luck!

These kind of questions are so sad.
When there is even a remote chance you could be pregnant, WHY WERE YOU DRINKING?
The first three months are the most crucial. When I became sexually active I stopped all of that. I would NEVER be able to live with myself if I had a baby and something was wrong with it, and it COULD be my fault.
Some people are just willing to take chances with their unborn babys health. I was not one of them.

Guilt just tears people up don't it?
If you don't want the truth, don't ask.
