To REDIRECT mental and emotional turmoil INTO physical pain, that being---PAIN that hurts enough to temporarily forget the mental and emotional torture on has been subjected to.

Some do it just to feel. Pain is as real as a feeling you can have. Some like the site of their own blood. Either flowing or coagulating into a pool. Some like the taste of their own blood. And some just like the way their body looks after it's been cut. This is just one person's anonymous theory.

It's actually very common among teenage girls. And no, in my experience it has nothing (in most cases) to do with abuse. It's a way of exerting control when you feel helpless. It gives you a feeling of power over your own body and therefore your life.

Also, I think sometimes pain helps one to put things in perspective...if your life is stressful, physical pain can make you remember that it could be a lot worse. Your life is not so bad.

i bite my nails.. is that considered self mutilation?
and i dont do it coz im nervous.. i do it coz its a habit and i cant stop..

others (not just emos) cut themselves because they feel that the pain they cause, take them away from their own pain..
the body focuses on the most recent pain.. which is why when something really hurts ill bite the inside of my lip.. to take away the pain in say.. my leg?
its just that some people take it too far.

Sometimes the pain inside is too much to bear. It's easier to manifest that pain in a physical form to help cope with it.
It is easier to tend to a physcial wound than an emotional one.

...its usually due to some child hood trauma, from physical and emotional abuse. This later manifest it self into self mutilation. Depression plays a key part in this.

Emotional pain often leads to physical pain. Sometimes people try to stifle their emotional pain by hurting themselves physically. It's a vicious and tragic cycle.

Because to them it takes the pain away, even though it physically hurts and it puts emotional pain into physical pain.it takes the other pain/sadness/anger that they are dealing with off their minds.Did i help?
