Nearest beach community is Ocean Beach. Straight shot west on highway 8, about a dozen miles from campus. Relatively speaking less expensive than other beach communities, with many students who live there as well as families, retired people, and young and middle age adults. Lots and lots of apartments/condos so I'm sure you'll find something easily. Most of town is within a few blocks walk to the beach. Many surfers live there as it's possible to walk to the beach and surf in the morning, then walk back home, shower, and then go to work/school.

Ocean Beach also has a long fishing pier that's open and busy 24 hours a day. Near the foot of the pier there's usually some intoxicated homeless people, but not very many.

If you can buy/rent the movie Almost Famous, early in the movie, the lead actor is walking with his mother in the downtown of the funky beach community where they live. That's Newport Ave., which is the center of Ocean Beach. Check it out! Also, here's a link to a description of town from the local newspaper: http://entertainment.signonsandiego.com/places/citywalks-ocean-beach/

You're lucky if you go there. We didn't live in the west otherwise I'd like to go there see some Aztecs game and just feel groovy, read, graduate and live in San Diego happily ever after. But, I don't know. San Elijio State Beach is 26 miles from Old Town

San Jose is 35 miles from Santa Cruz on a winding road which takes about an hour but all roads all well-traveled with commuters. San Jose has smog and heat in the summer. It is the heart of Silicon Valley and those jobs are coming back. It is the largest city in the bay area and 1 hour from San Francisco. The student body is ethnically diverse with Latino and Vietnamese kids. They have good business courses.
