The pitch of a roof is its slope. If the roof is 20 feet long and 5 feet from its base to its peak, what is the pitch of the roof?

slope = vertical change / horizontal change.

So you have slope = 5/20 = 0.25 which is the same as pitch

So one side of the roof is a triangle where the roof is the hypoteneuse, right? SO the hypot is 20 and the opposite side is 5. We need the adjacent side to find the slope or pitch. So
20*20=5*5 + xx where x is the adjacent side
400-25=375 and sqrt[375]=19.4 so the pitch is 5/19.4 unless the adjacent side IS 20? then the slope or pitch is 5/20 = .25

Slope is rise over run. Depending on how you define "the roof", the answer MIGHT be 5/20, or 0.25

But I don't think this is correct. I think the real answer is more involved. Have you used square roots or the Pythagorean Theorem in your class? That is,

a squared + b squared = c squared, where c is the hypotenuse of a right triangle, and a and b are sides of the right triangle.

5 squared + b squared = 20 squared
b squared = 400 - 25 = 375
b = 5 x square root 11, or about 15.3

Then the slope would be 5/15.3, or about 0.3

Hey there!

Use the following formula:

slope=rise/run

Here's the answer.

slope=rise/run -->
slope=20/5 -->
slope=4 -->
pitch=4

So the pitch of the roof is 4 feet.

It can also be the reciprocal. So, the pitch can be 0.25.

Hope it helps!

pitch of roof
= slope of roof
= tangent of the agle roof makes with horizontal
= 5 ft / sqrt[20^2 -- 5^2] ft
= 1/sqrt15.
= 0.2583.

Consider the dimensions as part of a right triangle where 20 ft is the hypotenuse. You want the ratio of 5 ft/horizontal length. Now figure it out for yourself.
