if you really want make them, you can check out a material store and buy the supplies there, also ask about printing on cloth.. ( like how some people get pictures on tshirts). and ask if they can do that or if they know a place that can.

some stores, like walmart for example, have TONS of photo gift options. I know for a fact walmart does have the feature to go on to their website, upload a photo, and submit an order online ( no payment needed) and you can pick it up in a few weeks at your local store. check for stores like these that have a photo center and see if they have them available.
mind you that sometimes it can run a bit costly, but compared to making them they may run along the same price.. and you would good quality as well :) good luck

Go to a patchwork fabric store and buy a packet of fabric sheets that have been pretreated to be able to be put through your inkjet printer, they are A4 size. Find your photo you want, and if it is not in your computer, scan it or whatever means you have to get it into your computer, set it up with the color scheme you want with an art program or even ideas for frames on the photo program, and print out directly onto the fabric. Follow instructions that come with the fabric pack and you can be sure of success, with your own pictures on your handmade placemats that can be used every year by the recipients.
Hope this helps

You can buy fabric that you can print on using an ink jet printer. If you can't find it at the office supply store, go to a quilting store. Your picture will only be letter-paper size, so you'll have to add on extra fabric to make it placemat size. Then put it together with a thin layer of batting or flannel, a back layer, and stitch through all three layers. Put a binding on, and you're done!

you can't laminate cloth. Pick out a fabric for a backing , you can have any picture transferred onto fabric at photo shops, and then you can put a clear coat that is designed for fabric on it. glue it to the placemat and then use a water-based polyurethane as the last coat to seal it

I have done this, I used calico, I cut the calico out to A4 size, and cut out A4 sizes of the paper that comes wrapped around the plain A4 white paper, It is waxed on one side and ironed the 2 together then put it through my inkjet printer and printed out the picture I wanted, the wax paper keeps the calico stiff, just peel off when finished, I also made a quilt using this method, Good Luck :)

Go to the store and get some material, like linen or something with a stiff type texture and then transfer paper and whatever picture you want and create away.
It's a sweet idea.
Good Luck!

Make sure the printer fabric says "washable" on the label. Or you can make your own using white muslin or Egyptian cotton, pre-treat with bubble jet set and finished with bubble jet rinse from http://dharmatrading.com

Iron the fabric to pieces of freezer paper, then cut to fit your printer. Tape this to a piece of cardstock using one long piece of tape across the top. Don't tape the sides or bottom.

Wash the finished product to make sure your printer ink will stand up to many washings.
