m = (y - (-5))/(-1 - (-6))
m = (y + 5)/5

Perpendicular lines have opposite reciprocal slopes

(y + 5)/5 = -5/(y + 5)

so as you can see
y + 5 = 13
y = 8

ANS : y = 8

the pair of things have here slope: (y2-y1)/(x2-x1) = (y - 5) / (-a million - (-6)) = (y-5)/ 5 the slope perpendicular to m is -a million/m, so slope perpendicular to -5 /13 is 13/5 so (y - 5) / 5 = 13/5 y - 5 = 13 y =18

Explanation #1 is the algebraic explanation that's incorrect. Explanation #2 is the calculus explanation, but I doubt if you have taken calculus.

The crux of the problem is that the line's slope is the NEGATIVE RECIPROCAL of -5/13 or 13/5.
Then from the definition of slope of a line, you can write slope=delta y/delta x. Inserting your two points, you have 13/5 = (y-(-5))/(-1 -(-6)) . So solve.

That gives you an equality.

First dy/dx = (y--5)/(-1--6) =(y+5)/(-1 + 6) = (y+5) / 5

If perpendicular, it is negative reciprocal. Therefore;
- 5/13 is original slope
-5/13 = 5/(y+5) (use negative reciprocal)

Now solve:
-5(y+5) =13 * 5
-y-5 = 13 ( 5's cancel)
-y = 18
y = -18

(y + 5)/(-- 1 + 6) = -- 1 / (5/13)
=> y = -- 5 -- 5(13/5) = -- 5 -- 13 = -- 18.

why make simple thing difficult by talking calculus etc.
13/5 = y2-y1/x2-x1.put value and do it in a second.
