It's the first day for X-mas shopping. There are tons of sales, but it's because we all start our Christmas shopping on that day (technically). I found a link that can help; http://retailindustry.about.com/od/abouttheretailindustry/g/black_friday.htm
Americans don't start with Christmas stuff until after Thanksgiving, not like some countries in Europe where they started selling Christmas stuff 2 weeks ago.

People were even pitching their tents in front of the electronics stores the day before the doors opened! Crazy....
Most people have the Friday off of work the day after Thanksgiving, which is always on a Thursday. I have friends that plan a route between the different stores. I hate to shop, so i hide from this type of behavior! One store had laptops with a printer on sale for $220 and there were two pallets stacked 7 feet tall and were sold out in 4 minutes!
I think the term "black" refers to the stores books, they will be in the black that day, and will make money.
You should have seen the car accidents on the news last night because of it!

Black Friday is THE BIGGEST SHOPPING DAY OF THE YEAR!!!!! Traditonally here in America the Friday after Thanksgiving Holidays has become literally the largest buying/selling day ever. Stores that normally open at like 8 am are open as early as 4 am. People get flyers in the newspapers on Thanksgiving day that advertise what "special items" will be on sale. You can buy things dirt cheap during these sales. Last year my mother in law got our son a dvd/tv combo that was 32'' sized for 60 bucks!!!! irs fyn but a pain un the tush too, i'd be going in the am but having just had Aubrey i think this yr ill stay home

It's the day after American Thanksgiving. Most stores start their sales that day, and Americans travel to malls before they are open and await the morning sales. It's a bigger deal in some parts of the country, like Texas, than others.
Commercialism at its best. The term "Black" refers to inventory, I believe.

It could be related to Easter. Black Sunday, or Quasimodo, is the first Sunday after Easter, and is known as Black Sunday. I don't know if there is a Black Friday connected to Easter.
It may also relate to a day when share values crashed in the 1980's, on a Friday.
If neither of those are correct answers, then, like Robinson Crusoe, I am marooned.
