I want to be a nurse sooo bad sometimes but I'm afraid...?
I was in the nursing program at a community college for 1/2 of this semester before I dropped out. I was passing the tests, but became stressed out during check-off. Perhaps it's because I'm not a hands on person. I've wanted to be a nurse since I was fourteen, but my teacher said that I should consider a desk job since I am extremely shy, sensitive, and underweight. ( Stress caused me to lose 10 lbs during nursing school). I'm not sure maybe I should be an accountant? Everyone describes me as an introvert. The one thing that scares me about nursing is blood and IVs. I am not sure if I can overcome this fear. I would like a nice quiet stress - free repetitive job, however I also want to help people. What should I choose nursing (RN, BS ) or accounting (CPA)?

It sounds like you like the romanticized idea of being a nurse better than the real thing. Sure, it'd be cool to rush around the ER and give people good news but the reality is that nurses do most of the needlework and clean up work at hospitals. If you can't get over that there's no way you can be functional in that environment. An accountant is a very good living with good hours and low stress. According to your description of yourself, it sounds like an ideal job for you. I really think it would be a good idea for you to learn a little more about accountancy and explore it as a very possible career option. Best of luck!

well, I don't think you should be a nurse. It can't hurt to learn about medical things as a hobby. That is what I do. However, a CPA is a stressful job too! My husband is a brilliant Mathematician and he even had a hard time passing the CPA test. Also, he now works in governmental accounting and has been offered a job with a CPA firm but it would involve long hours and lots of stress. (This is why he declined) There are many accounting jobs that involve having a degree in Accounting that don't require a CPA license and you might actually enjoy these a little more.

Nursing and accounting don't have to be your only alternatives. Is the teacher who advised you to consider a desk job a nursing professor? The answer to that question will have a bearing on how much weight to give the advice. If blood and IVs really do turn you off, remember that there are other helping professions, such as counseling, teaching, or social work. Can you talk with a guidance counselor at your community college or your former high school?

It also depends on what kind of work you want to do as a CPA. I am an auditor and I have to deal with clients all the time and my job can be very stressful. There are lots of accounting jobs that would allow you to keep to yourself though.

P.S. I wish stress caused me to lose weight instead of gain it.
