The day after Thanksgiving is known as Black Friday because. All year, the retail industry operates at a loss or rather "in the red". But the day after Thanksgiving, they make enough money, traditionally to move "into the black", or rather into a profitable state.

It should be called "Red Friday" because it is the day when people start running up their credit card debt. With interest rates rising I would expect it to be a dismal season but you know how Americans are. Some of us keep spending and spending like there is no tomorrow.

many retail businesses depend on Christmas sales as their sales during the rest of the year don't generate enough cash, and they have to borrow, or be IN THE RED. Most businesses do so well that day, that they start making real profit, said to be IN THE BLACK--or POSITIVE cash flow. Has NOTHING WHATSOEVER to do with racial discrimination.

The "black" in Black Friday refers to the fact that retailers are operating in the black starting on the Friday after Thanksgiving, due to the large sales that they have. Operating in the black is an accounting term meaning that they are turning a profit. Negative profits are written in red ink, positive in black ink.
