Suffixes and prefixes are ways of making new words that explain something quicker. For example, instead of saying "the kind of school you go to before real school", we say "preschool". Instead of saying "less than standard", we say "substandard". Instead of saying "full of beauty", we say "beautiful".

It is one of the little tricks that lets English adapt to all kinds of new ideas. We can say in a word what many other languages take a sentence to say. Once you learn the meaning of most of the prefixes and suffixes, you can usually guess what the word means.

If you come across a word that you don't know the definition for, but you can recognize suffixes, or prefixes, you could figure out the general meaning of the word.
