I only get a replacement item when something breaks & can no longer be used for it's original purpose. I used to keep everything & it took me years to get rid of the excess. If the thieves had not started stealing from me, I might never have been able to successfully clean my life of excess clutter from saved items!
I now donate ASAP or give it to someone who I know is in need of it or wants some part to fix something else! I only throw garbage in the trash. We have strict recycling laws where I live.
Now if I ever need a replacement hip, I just might want to keep a piece of the old one in a jar for a laugh!
I have learned to keep ALL of my receipts in case the new item is faulty & I must return it to the store where I purchased it.
This is why I like Wal-Mart. They take anything back at anytime, even with an old receipt!

I usually keep the old item, just 4 some time because it is kind of hard to just throw away after it has been with u for a certain period of time.

Unfortunately, I usually keep it. Sometimes there is someone that can use the old one, but it takes too much effort to find them. Some things are taken away by the store where the new item is purchased.

When a item gets replaced, the old has been repaired to the end of its usefulness, however, I may keep "good" parts for possible later rigging of the new.

Why would I buy a "new replacement item" if the old one still works? If I buy a new one because it does more or I need something bigger, like a 4 slice toaster, I'd give my working 2 slice toaster to the Salvation Army.

Like a fool....I keep them. For what ,I don't really know, because if they worked I wouldn't have bought a new one. I have a garage full of those items. Full of things that don't work, can't be fixed.....but for some un-godly reason they are there. One thing for sure though.....the DAY I throw them out.....they will be good for something. LOL

I first see if it is still usable...if so, it goes to the thrift store or Goodwill. I never keep stuff I no longer have a need for. I figure planned obsolescence takes care of everything eventually.

I throw away the old one when I get a new one. Then my husband digs it out of the trash and keeps it. He's done this with toasters, shirts, blankets and dog collars. He does have enough sense to hide it from me.

Many brands of disposable razors have colored indicator strips on them that fade to white over time as they grow duller and less effective. When you can't see the color without effort, throw out the razor.
