This has caused some confusion.

Black Friday is the cornerstone for the holiday shopping season. The day after thanksgiving is the biggest shopping day in regards for the holiday. Usually, this is the day that will make or break a store. The black refers to when the figures are positive and they are out of debt. Otherwise, a company that is seeing red, is in a lot of debt. Black Friday is when all the money comes rolling in.

To eliminate confusion, some people have started calling it "Green Friday" which honestly, makes more sense and is pretty obvious for what it stands for.

It's called black friday because it's the one day of the year where the stores make the most profit. Most stores start making a profit on this day, which is also called 'going into the black'. So it was named Black Friday.

It's called that because the sales on the Friday after Thanksgiving, which starts the Christmas buying season, is what puts retail stores in "the black".

Accounting wise, when a business is in the "red" it means red ink, which is what accountants use to show a negative number.
When a business is in the "black" it means black ink, which is what accountants use to show a positive number.

Most retail businesses meet and/or surpass their profit margins by the Friday after Christmas.

Now do you understand better what Black Friday means?

Yes, this is the time that most retailers are finally able to take their profits from negative (in the red) to positive (in the black).
Don't feel obligated to go out and stand in long lines at the stores. There are plenty of deals that you can score online.
